Symptoms of Panic
Attacks
What is a Panic
Attack?
A panic attack is defined as a short period of extreme anxiety,
irrational fear and apprehension. An anxiety panic attack can last anywhere from a couple of minutes to an
hour or so though typically it just lasts from a few minutes up to ten minutes or so. However to the person
experiencing the panic attack it can appear to last a lot longer as time seems to stand
still.
Panic attacks are triggered by
anxiety. Once your anxiety issues are diagnosed and treated you will stop having recurring
panic attacks. A stressful day or situation is enough to trigger the symptoms of a panic attack. Worry and
anxiousness about having another panic attack will often make a further attack happen. It gets to be a
vicious cycle, one that you can never seem to get off without some help from a
professional.
Unfortunately people who experience panic attacks feel like they are going crazy and that they are losing their mind and
therefore do not seek help for fear of being ‘locked up.’ This simply
is not the case!

The symptoms of the panic attack is your body’s defence system, the
fight or flight reaction we have built in for survival when confronted with anything
unexpected.
Whenever we are
‘spooked’ our adrenal glands release adrenalin into our bloodstream. Adrenalin gives us heightened abilities to help deal with emergency situations. However, in
a panic attack when we have this surge of unexpected adrenalin we misinterpret what it means, we feel fear
and the need to escape that fear. These signals go back to the adrenal glands that we need more adrenaline to
cope with a bad situation and more adrenalin is pumped into our blood stream, this enhances the symptoms of a
panic attack.
By now you are starting to think you are having a full blown heart attack. Your breathing is heavy and strained, your
heart is banging away, you feel pain in your chest, your head is all fuzzy and you feel sick to your
stomach.
Now to add to your
discomfort of the panic attack symptoms, you are fully aware of where you are and you feel
that everyone is looking at you. The last thing you need is to make a complete fool of yourself in the middle
of the store or wherever you happen to be. This adds to your misery and exacerbates the panic attack
symptoms.
Firstly understand that no-one else can see what you are going
through. Unless you are flailing on the floor no-one will ever know you are having a massive panic attack.
Relax. Take a slow deep breath in and hold it for ten seconds and exhale slowly.
Once you realize these are only
symptoms of a panic attack, you can start to relax. Relaxing will signal the adrenal glands
that all is well and they will start capturing the adrenaline from the bloodstream. This will remove the
heightened symptoms you have been experiencing. Keep breathing slowly and the panic attack will come to an
end.
Generally it is quite common to find you are totally exhausted after
a panic attack. The body has been put into flight mode and it does take time to get back to normal, so relax,
have a drink of water and try to forget everything you just went through.
Now you are armed with a
powerful tool. You have experienced and lived through a panic attack and the next time you
have one it will be easier to control. Now you know what causes the panic attack symptoms you can stop them
in their tracks.
The next time you feel any panic
attack symptoms, try to make yourself relax. Breathe deeply and tell yourself everything is going to be
fine. Concentrate on your breathing and slow down your heart rate. Tell yourself you are fine, there is
nothing to fear and this will stop the adrenaline flow. Allow all the panic attack symptoms to wash over you,
observe and let go, don’t allow them to control you.
With practice you can live your life panic attack symptom
