Anxiety Attack Symptoms and How to Overcome Them

Anxiety Attack SymptomsEveryone can have varying degrees of anxiety attacks and every one you experience can have different anxiety attack symptoms! It is important to recognize the symptoms of an attack in yourself or loved one and to seek help as soon as possible.

What is the difference between an anxiety attack and a panic attack?

Anxiety attacks and panic attacks are more or less the same thing, some people refer to panic attacks and anxiety attacks as meaning the same thing.  However, clinically panic attacks are short bursts of  dis-ease that brings about an urgent need to escape and the intensity of emotions and is often ten-fold that of an anxiety attack. A panic attack usually subsides after ten minutes or so whereas anxiety attacks can last much longer and are more of a long term experience. Panic attacks happen without cause or warning.

However with general anxiety disorder, people can experience a constant low level of anxiety that bursts periodically into a full blown anxiety attack. They can usually pinpoint what causes their anxiety. They have worries that they know causes them anxiety and constant concern such as lack of money, the need for a job for extra income, a disabled child or parent, or being left alone for short periods of time for example. Whether or not that worry is a real problem or one that they have blown all out of proportion doesn't matter. It is enough to cause distress to the point that everyday living is miserable and they live under a cloud of doom and gloom.

  • Insomnia

  • An anxiety attack generally lasts for a longer period of time compared to a panic attack. The feelings are not as intense as a panic attack and can last hours, weeks or even months and left untreated can become more severe as time goes by.

The sufferer fears another attack and the worry and fear will trigger further anxiety attacks. It is a vicious cycle and therefore it is imperative that it is nipped in the bud early.

Left untreated it can lead to depression and more complicated symptoms such as phobias. Many people with general anxiety disorder also have other disorders such as bi-polar, OCD - obsessive compulsive disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, PTSD- post traumatic stress disorder.

Stress anxiety attacks are our body’s natural defence mechanisms, the fight or flight signals that happen whenever we are faced with a sudden, unpleasant situation. In a sufferer of anxiety attacks, this defence mechanism has become abnormal.  They over-react to minor situations, ones that they should be able to take in their stride. However the more severe the anxiety attacks become the more exaggerated their response also becomes. In other words, the more you worry the bigger and longer lasting the anxiety attack becomes.

It was generally considered that as we mature with age that our over-sensitive reactions would diminish however, this is not the case. By leaving your anxiety attacks untreated, they generally become more severe and manifest in more complicated symptoms.
