What’s the Best Solution for Panic Attacks?
AUTHOR: Anne Owens
Is stress reduction a viable solution for panic attacks? Is medication a better solution? Is therapy the best solution for panic attacks? Should I take certain herbs? Does the solution for my panic attacks lie in my diet? What’s the best solution for a panic attack? The answer is all of the above. Medicine, therapy, diet, stress reduction, herbal supplements – all of these things are good solutions for panic attack, and the best solution is probably some combination of them all.
The most complete solution for panic attacks is probably therapy. Since panic attacks are only a symptom of an underlying problem and therapy can effectively address these underlying problems, it will eventually make the panic attacks go away. However, therapy takes awhile and some solution for panic attacks must be had in the meantime. This is where medication comes in.
Medication for panic attacks is a very effective, but incomplete solution for panic attacks. Medications can suppress panic attacks for long periods of time, and some medications can stop panic attacks in progress. They are such an effective solution for panic attacks because they all basically prevent the production of the biochemicals that cause the attacks. As effective a solution as they are, medications are an imperfect solution because they don’t address the causes of the panic attacks. Think of panic attack medications as Band-aids. They don’t heal your wound, but they stop the wound from bleeding while the body heals it. You will always have the chance of having panic attacks and will always need to be on medication if you don’t seek therapy or some other way to address the anxiety causing the attacks. This is why medication should usually be used in conjunction with therapy.
As a solution for panic attacks, therapy and medicine make a pretty effective team, but stress reduction can make them even more effective. Indeed, stress reduction alone can be a good place to start when trying to determine if your panic attacks are in response to actual stress or some irrational anxiety that needs more comprehensive treatment. Further, as you go through treatment for anxiety and learn to distinguish rational from irrational fear, stress reduction can keep you from developing an unhealthy focus on rational fear. While it’s good not to have a panic attack for no apparent reason, you don’t want to have a panic attack over your credit card bills, either. Stress reduction makes therapy and medication a more effective solution for panic attacks.
Part of stress reduction includes increasing your exercise and improving your diet. Herbs alone probably won’t work as a solution for panic attacks, but they can help in combination with other stress reduction techniques. Lavender and ylang ylang are calming agents and can help still your mind in quiet moments like right before you fall asleep. Caffeine itself shouldn’t cause a panic attack but, with tremors and a racing heart, it can effect your body in a way that feels like a panic attack thus inducing an actual panic attack. It is a good idea to avoid caffeine when trying to treat anxiety and panic attacks.
A complete solution for panic attacks has a lot of components. You will need therapy and may need to take medication. You should reduce stress and improve your diet. While it may seem like a lot to do all at once, employing all these techniques is the best solution for panic attacks.
