The first step to learn about how to successfully overcome anxiety is to educate yourself about anxiety. Read everything you possibly can about anxiety, what triggers it, how the body responds and the many ways to manage anxiety. It is also helpful to educate family members and loved ones so that they understand the problem as well. This way, they can frequently be very helpful in overcoming anxiety.

To overcome anxiety, it is imperative to determine exactly what triggers the anxiety. This may be an object, an event, a situation or a past experience. Often, it is helpful to work with a health care professional in identifying the source of the anxiety. By knowing what triggers anxiety, it is possible to reduce exposure to those triggers by managing your lifestyle in some cases. In order cases, you may determine that the trigger is something that you want to use exposure therapy, especially in the case of phobias, to overcome.

Another key to learn how to successfully overcome anxiety is to learn new ways of thinking about and dealing with the anxiety triggers. Often, negative self-talk may be the source of the anxiety and positive thinking must be learned. In other cases, irrational beliefs may be the problem and new facts must replace the old, unfounded beliefs.

It is also important to set small, achievable, measurable goals along the way and celebrate your achievements. For example, if you are striving to overcome social anxiety disorder, once you become comfortable in a small social group, you might want to plan a dinner party at a local restaurant as a reward for yourself. This reward reinforced in the mind of the person with anxiety that they have achieved something valuable and important.

As you progress in the knowledge of how to successfully overcome anxiety and put these techniques into daily practice, you'll want to focus on living a life of wellness, peace and serenity. The absence of anxiety is a great feeling and, if you are motivated and dedicated to overcoming anxiety, you can learn to manage anxiety effectively in day to day life. Don't live with anxiety when you can do something about the problem.
