How an Anxiety Disorder Could Destroy Your Family

AUTHOR: Grace Abbott

Anxiety In Family
If you or a loved one has an anxiety disorder, you need to know that if the disorder is not treated and effectively managed, it can completely destroy your family. It happens all too frequently that a person will refuse to accept that they have a disorder and remain in denial, causing strife in every aspect of family life.

When a person with an anxiety disorder either doesn't realize they have a problem or refuses to obtain professional treatment, they suffer. Those around them suffer as well. It is difficult to see a loved on having panic attacks or so frightened of social situations that they can not attend events with the family. Eventually, this can erode the family structure and cohesiveness.

The physical aspects of anxiety disorders can be scary for both the person having the disorder and those around them. Sweating, facial reddening, heart palpitation, severe panic attacks and other symptoms are visible to the entire family that happens to be present.

In the case of phobias, which are anxiety disorder, a person may not be able to do certain activities or go certain places because of their disorder. Frequently, a family member with phobia about flying will refuse a dream vacation, leaving everyone stuck about what to do.

It is very important that the person that has the anxiety disorder and their family become educated about the particular disorder. In this category are generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress and phobia disorders. Understanding exactly what triggers an attack and how the family can help prevent attacks before onset can build a bond as well as help the person with the disorder better manage their disease.

If you or a loved one has an anxiety disorder, do not wait for the family to be destroyed by the disorder before seeking help. Professional counseling for the entire family is available and help for the specific disorder is also readily available.
