Anxiety Relief Starts with Recognition and Diagnosis

AUTHOR: Ruth O'Brien

Anxiety Relief
Many people who suffer from anxiety disorders have lived with them for so long, they fail to realize the degree to which worry, obsessions and paranoia are affecting their lives. Some may recognize and try to treat one or several symptoms of anxious disorders without any awareness or acknowledgement of the true cause of their problems. But for lasting anxiety relief to occur, a clinical approach is almost always necessary.

What Are The Signs?

Is someone close to you suffering from an anxiety disorder, or is he or she just a worrywart? For starters, nobody should live in a constant state of worry, even under dire life circumstances where it seems worry may be justified. Feeling worried or anxious most of the time indicates something other than a personality quirk. Anxiety or worry that lasts for more than six months is a symptom of an anxiety disorder. When worry or anxiety affects an individuals’ ability to function at work or school, limits or interferes with their social life and relationships, or prevents the accomplishment of everyday tasks, professional help is needed.

Experiencing three or more of the following symptoms consistently may also indicate an anxiety disorder:

  • Obsessive thoughts about insignificant matters

  • Muscle tension and/or body aches

  • Unexplained fatigue

  • Inability to concentrate

  • Irritability

  • Inability to relax/restlessness

  • Drug or alcohol abuse

  • Difficulty sleeping

Professional Diagnosis

Recognizing that a disorder is affecting an individual’s life is perhaps the most important step toward achieving anxiety relief. It is crucial at this point that professional help be sought out.

A visit to an individual’s regular doctor to eliminate illness or another medical condition as the cause of prolonged anxiety is a great place to start. During evaluation, as much information about the symptoms as possible must be relayed. There are a variety of types of anxiety disorders, and it is important that an accurate diagnosis is made.

Either before or after arriving at a complete diagnosis, a referral to a mental health professional is likely. Appropriate medications and therapy for anxiety relief can then be discussed and prescribed. The good news about anxiety disorders is that once the problem is recognized, there are a variety of avenues available for treatment.

Treatment Options

One or a combination of treatment methods may be effective in initiating anxiety relief. The length and intensity of treatments varies among individuals and is specific to their symptoms and disorders. Possibilities include:

  • Medication.

  • Cognitive therapy

  • Behavior therapy

  • Stress Reduction and Relaxation techniques

In addition, doctors generally recommend patients begin a regular exercise program. In some circumstances, nutritional supplements or dietary recommendations will also be made.
Treatment for anxiety disorders is often a long-term undertaking, but ending the suffering of debilitating symptoms is well worth the effort. Recognition of the problem and a correct diagnosis are the first steps toward recovery that provides a lifetime of anxiety relief.
