A Panic Attack Support Group Can Help Both You and Your Loved Ones

Panic Attack Support Group
If your panic attacks are the result of an underlying phobia like agoraphobia or, even perhaps depression, you are probably already familiar with the benefits of a support group to help handle anxiety and panic attacks. If you or a loved one are experiencing panic attacks infrequently or don’t know the cause of the panic attacks, you probably haven’t thought about the benefits of a panic attack support group. You may want to investigate the idea of a panic attack support group as joining one can help both you and your loved ones cope with panic attacks.

A panic attack support group is beneficial to both you and your friends and family because it helps you cope with your panic attacks and it relieves them of some of the pressure of helping you with a medical condition that is difficult for them to understand. As well, a panic attack support group shows both you and your loved ones that you are not alone in dealing with panic attacks. This helps to stave off isolation and depression, not to mention frustration.

Most panic attack support groups operate in the context of supervised therapy. The most common and effective treatment for certain panic-attack-inducing phobias is gradual exposure therapy directed by a mental health professional. Obsessive compulsive disorder, which can also induce panic attacks in sufferers, is often treated with a combination of medication and behavior modification therapy. Group therapy is an important component of these treatments, so a panic attack support group is built into the process.

Even if you aren’t undergoing psychiatric therapy, the mental health community is still probably the easiest way to find a panic attack support group. Most large and even mid-size communities have public mental health clinics that may offer panic attack support groups for free or some nominal cost. Non-profit organizations that focus on mental health are also a good place to look for support groups.

If you need to, you can find a panic attack support group on the internet. On the one hand, such a community is good because it does allow you to communicate with others who share your issues and can help, but on the other hand, these groups can be less like support groups and more like information exchanges. Outside of a medical context, the information you are receiving could be false, or even worse, harmful. What’s more, it is hard to involve your family and friends in an internet support group. It will probably be easier for everyone to cope with your panic attacks if your friends and family can learn about and come to understand them at the same time you do.

A panic attack support group is a great tool to help both you and loved ones deal with, and possibly control panic and anxiety issues. To get the most benefit, be sure to find a group that is, in some way, connected to the medical community and is open to helping your family, too.
